The hype train has started, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down. AMD is out with its new line of processors, Ryzen. AMD is going all out this time, with claims that they exceeded even their own goals. They claimed a 52% increase in IPC (Instructions per Cycle), which is a massive gain. The review embargo lifts on March 2nd, the same day that the processors will be available to the public.
Paul’s Hardware has put up a very clean video on the unboxing of the press kit that was sent out to reviewers. AMD seems to have outdone themselves, sending the package in a walnut wood box which contains the processor, a hearty amount of bubble wrap, a motherboard and RAM. Ryzen uses the AM4 socket, and the DDR4 ram, so AMD made sure all the reviewers had what they needed to test out Ryzen. They also included a Noctua cooler. A black Noctua cooler. I didn’t even know Noctua knew that colours apart from brown exist!
Early leaked benchmarks show great promise, but of course, as with all leaks, take those with a pinch of salt. That hasn’t stopped the community from losing their minds though. This has possibly been the most talked about release in the hardware community for a while, what with allegations of anti-competitive business practises, buyer manipulation and more being thrown around. We really should hope for a strong showing from AMD this year and finally bring back some choice in the Intel ruled processor department!
