Get your wallet and/or credit card ready – 2017 is chockfull of awesome releases

2016 is finally in the books. We saw a ton of memorable games but with 2017 upon us, it’s time to focus on the highest profile launches of the New Year. Make no mistake – this year is arguably bigger for gamers as a whole. Let’s take a look at ten of the most anticipated games of 2017 and why you should play them.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Release date: February 28th

Platforms: PS4

What happens when society falls and robots take over the Earth, right down to establishing their own ecosystem? Horizon: Zero Dawn, from Guerrilla Games of Killzone fame, seeks to answer that question. You play as Aloy, a hunter with a hidden talent who explores the vast world, interacting with other villages and hunting down giant robots. The sheer scale and breath-taking beauty of Horizon: Zero Dawn gives us Witcher 3 vibes and that’s certainly a good thing.

NieR: Automata

Save mankind from killer robots…as a killer robot.

Release date: March 10th

Platforms: PS4, PC

NieR: Automata comes from the wicked minds of Platinum Games who brought us classics like Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising. What makes this new addition in the Nier universe so enticing though? The recent demo offered a peek at the fast-paced combat, bullet hell shooting and even flying sequences that only whet our appetite for the full game. If sleek action is what you crave, then NieR: Automata is for you.

Mass Effect: Andromeda

Release date: Q1/Q2 2017

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

Bioware’s sprawling space opera returns with Mass Effect: Andromeda. Featuring a massive open galaxy to explore and revamped combat, Andromeda features a brand new story and protagonists as humanity struggles to find a new home. With the return of co-op multiplayer, deep-seated choices and hours upon hours of quests, Mass Effect: Andromeda could probably reinvent open world RPGs.

Scalebound

Dragons, hacking, slashing and co-op. Sounds like a party!

Release date: 2017

Platforms: Xbox One, PC

NieR: Automata isn’t the only triple-A exclusive that Platinum Games has planned for 2017. Dragon-riding, hack and slash adventure Scalebound releases next year for Xbox One. Along with combat resembling Devil May Cry and the ability to pilot a dragon, players will be able to team with three other players for crazy epic battles.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Link embarks on his biggest adventure yet.

Release date: 2017

Platforms: Wii U, Switch

Link returns but the world has changed. Hyrule as we know it has evolved and with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s become absolutely massive. As the first Zelda title to hit Nintendo’s new Switch, Breath of the Wild will take the formula into never-before-seen directions. Cooking, hunting, crafting, disposable weapons, revamped combat and so much more could make this the Zelda title of a lifetime. Now all we need is a release date.

Resident Evil 7

Release date: January 24th

Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC, PlayStation VR

Resident Evil 7 was one of the biggest surprises at E3 2016 but not because it was unexpected. The very fact that it’s in first person has us intrigued (and rubbed many hardcore fans the wrong way). The return to survival horror is welcome and many tropes – such as the type-writers, inventory management and conserving ammunition – are still prevalent. Besides, when’s the last time a Resident Evil title properly scared you?

Gran Turismo Sport

Polyphony’s classic racing sim stages a comeback.

Release date: 2017

Platforms: PS4, PlayStation VR

Forza Motorsport 7 will likely have its time in the sun this year but can you earn a professional racing license like in Gran Turismo Sport? Polyphony Digital has been banging away on its next realistic racer, packing it with online events and even a VR Tour Mode for PlayStation VR. Coupled with a strong campaign, amazing visuals and 140 cars, Gran Turismo Sport could be your next big PS4 racing fix.

Ghost Recon Wildlands

Release date: March 7th

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

The Ghosts are going open world. Ghost Recon Wildlands takes place in Bolivia as players combat a number of rising drug cartels. Tackle missions with either stealth or full-on violence with plenty of vehicles to drive and gadgets to use. Ubisoft is promising its biggest world yet with nine biomes, dynamic weather and tons of NPCs to interact with. Team up with three other players and tackle missions together with co-op for even more explosive plans of attack.

For Honor

Go medieval (or Viking or Samurai) on your enemies!

Release date: February 14th

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

It’s the best of times and the bloodiest of times in For Honor. Ubisoft Montreal’s slasher/team-based action hybrid features a robust combat system with emphasis on positioning, stance and timing. Now throw in three opposing factions (Vikings, Samurai and Knights), AI combatants that fight alongside you and bloody executions. If competitive multiplayer isn’t your cup of tea then the dedicated campaign should satisfy you with its grisly combat.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The prodigal son returns.

Release date: Fall 2017

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One

Perhaps the most anticipated sequel of all time, Red Dead Redemption 2 will finally see Rockstar return to the Wild West. We know there will be a huge multiplayer focus (think Grand Theft Auto Online) and perhaps multiple playable characters. What happened to the previous game’s characters? How big will the world be? Will it come to PC? We’ll find out as the year rolls on.
