Halcyon 6: Starbase Commander Review

Just as any other Space sci-fi games always draw good interest, in Halcyon 6 the players will find themselves in an alien world where the human race lives side by side with aliens.

Just as any other Space sci-fi games always draw good interest, in Halcyon 6 the players will find themselves in an alien world where the human race lives side by side with aliens. One of the alien species, called the Chruul, is not feeling the humans and starts massacring them en masse. Your role is to protect the human race and explore ways to make the human race thrive in these dangerous times.  You will take on aliens, monsters and pirates and what not.

Halcyon’s graphics are simplistic, much like Pokémon. You will have a team of officers each with special skills: engineering, combat tactics, science and tech. You will use the specialty of each officer in your mission for base battles, discover new worlds and collect resource materials.

You will do combat, strategy and base building.  However, combat will take the biggest chunk of the gameplay. Being a ship commander you will be battling other ships, monsters/aliens. When your officers are on land battling pirates or aliens, they will use lasers, phasers, machetes and so on.

Unlike other space games where combat is prolonged and dramatic, in Halcyon combat is swift and intense. Adversaries can jump out from anywhere. You will have to be alert and know how to use combos of your officers’ talents to win these fights. The fights can be confusing, also adding to the mix is that friendly fire is also present in the game.

Management of all these aspects can be a bit challenging and might become too much for you. Early in the game you will be zooming around mobilizing human survivors and collecting resources while being open to surprise attacks.

Running errands can get boring as you will want to get into combat right away. But planning is everything.  Having officers with complementary skills before you get into combats will help resist attacks better.

Enemies differ in strength and ferocity.  Halcyon does not differ much when it comes to the composition of the enemies. There is the usual assortment of pirates, aliens and monsters. If you have played one or two space game you will feel that you are in one long game.

There is not much depth in the Halcyon story line. Collecting resources and men combat and space building is about the jinx of it all. If you are looking for an engaging storyline you will be a bit disappointed.

All in all, Halcyon is a fun game. You will have to be quick, decisive and on your feet (in the game) most of the time.  Sci-fi lovers will like the game for the quick action.
