The gaming world is rife with war games which focus on a soldier’s perspective. 11 Bit Studios, the developers of This War of Mine, truly deserves kudos for thinking out of the box. Instead of following the norm, the game studio chose to focus on the civilian aspect of war and the horror it inflicts upon non combatants. Available for Windows, Linux and OS X, the game has been recently released for Android and iOS platforms.
The game puts the player in a makeshift shelter populated by a group of civilians. The objective is to survive by scavenging for tools and materials. The game truly and successfully depicts what a civilian with no military training might face during a war. The major concerns are commodities like food, water, medicine and a safe place to hide. The game is divided into day and night phases. During the day, when it’s too risky outside, the players can indulge in activities such as upgrading the shelter, healing the survivors etc. The night phase however is more complex where scavenging is done for resources. During night time, players will encounter other survivors and here the moral dilemma lies. The players can either choose to help the NPC survivors, or take the other survivors’ resources and kill them.
It is highly enjoyable and will forever be etched in the memories of those who play it. The portrayal of a war torn environment and the horror it brings is very aptly and vividly rendered. This War of Mine is a must have for all those looking for a breed of survival based games.
