According to a report published no a well-known data firm, Newzoo, Esports is set to increase by over a third this year.

The report states that over one billion people globally will know about esports by the end of 2016—a 36 percent increase from 2015. It also suggests that the count of global esports enthusiastic audience will also increase from 131m. to 144m. Additionally the growth of esports audience in the upcoming years is projected to be passing 1.5 billion and over 200 million enthusiasts by 2019.

Newzoo states that India is lagging by a greater margin when it comes to awareness in esports while South Korea and China are still the dominant players in Asia’s esports scene. Out of Korea's 50 million residents, 32 million people have an awareness of esports while China makes up almost 30% of total global esports followers.

These increase is undoubtedly the result of significant increase of coverage of esports events by mainstream media like BBC, ESPN and recently Turtle Entertainment, who have acquired ownership of the leading global esports  company, ESL and launched the first 24/7 TV channel dedicated to esports.

Newzoo also cites the increase in publishers pushing their games as esports, such as Psyonix with Rocket League and the increased investment by Valve in both Dota 2 and Counter-Strike, as a major driving force behind wider esports awareness.
