Hyper Light Drifter Review
People liked Zelda for a reason, because it was fun and very innovative. Hyper Light Drifter is a 2D based action and role playing game that tries to recapture the elements of Zelda all while adding in some Diablo as well. The results are amazing and they do show how 2D games can still beat AAA titles nowadays.
You will control the Drifter, a character that tries to cure the illness he carries. In order to do so, he will have to face some major challenges as he goes along. Thankfully, there’s a large arsenal that he can use at his disposal and it’s all about trying to expand the arsenal as well as acquire new abilities as you go along.
The monsters that you face are quite difficult but never seem to pose that many challenges to begin with. Instead, the major emphasis of the game is on how everything manages to turn out in the end and that’s what really makes the title special. The gameplay is limited to slicing dashing and shooting when it comes to the combat but the visuals are very good and do help you get a very good experience. Bosses are however very challenging and that’s where you will have to face many issues, that’s for sure. Near the end you will have to deal with many enemy types and groups so you will need to strategies.
The graphics are amazing and they do showcase the good old 2D era of gaming. They are detailed, sometimes it can be hard to find secrets due to the level design but that’s why exploring the world is so important. And yes, there are many secrets you need to uncover, it’s all about making sure that you obtain great results because of that.
The music is good too, and so is the story. There are some questionable choices here such as the lack of written text aside from a few monoliths and that does make the story a little hard to understand. But since you will hack and slash most of the time, the need for a good story isn’t that essential.
An issue is that since the Hyper Light Drifter game relies so much of chaining dashes, you will need to try and create long chains which is not as easy as you might expect at first. Secrets are also a chore at times and even if they are varied, they are designed in order to be very hard to find so you will basically grind various portions of the levels you are in just to see if there are secrets.
Hyper Light Drifter is a pleasant and fun game with a few flaws. The story is not as good as you might want and the secrets are hard to find, but on the other hand the gameplay is fun and the esthetics are very good. If you want a solid, 2D based Zelda experience you just can’t go wrong with Hyper Light Drifter!
